Today we take a look at a trend that is gradually becoming popular and familiar amongst our brides in Nigeria. The Bridal Shower and Bachelorette Party. Some of us might think these two are one and the same, but there is a difference. As a young girl, the party I remember being held for my relatives getting married then was called “Bachelor’s Eve aka Bach Eve”, where EVERYONE was invited to the party and the party was usually in honour of the couple, instead of just the groom as the name says. But in the foreign movies, the “bachelor’s party was usually GUYS ONLY. I began to think it was a Nigerian thing, but now I’m older and I know better, there is a BIG difference between the two. For the sake of those who don’t know, I’m going to tell us the difference between the various parties held for would be brides and grooms. First, we start with the ladies (
after all, we run the world). *running away*
Bridal showers and Bachelorette parties are female parties for the bride-to-be and her friends and female relatives, but they both have different styles and customs.
- THE BRIDAL SHOWER: This is an occasion for friends and family to come with gifts for the expectant bride for herself and her new home. She usually gets items like kitchen utensils, bedding’s, household&home decor items, lingerie, nighties, items for pampering herself e.g bath soaps, scented oils and anything she can use to tantalize her man *chuckles* . Choice of venue is solely the decision of the organizers as it can be held anywhere. During the shower, the ladies play games and engage in a lot of fun activities that gets everyone involved.
- THE BACHELORETTE PARTY/HEN NIGHT: This is also called a Hen Party. It is an occasion for partying hard, letting your fine locks down, drinking, major gbeduing, raunchy activities&adult games and anything you can think of. This is a time for the bride-to-be to unwind and have a good time with the ladies as a single woman. Choice of venue is solely the decision of the organizers as it can be held anywhere.
Both types of parties are usually given by the bride-to-be’s closest friends or female relatives. The bride is most times not aware of the party, as it comes as a surprise.
Me I go like know my own shaa, cos I have A LOT of ideas. The bride can have one or both parties. What is obtainable in Nigeria most times is a blend of Bridal shower and Bachelorette party. Where the bridal shower rites are done first and bachelorette rites are done later. I think i like the Naija Style groove, where you have the best of both worlds. I also advice a fine blend of married and single ladies to attend especially for advice and words of encouragement segment and also prayers (very important).
If you are married, did you have any of the parties, What was it like? If your planning your wedding, are you getting any hints of a party? And if your not yet a bride to be, would you fancy a party just for you? Share your thoughts, Let’s get this conversation going.
